Which cloud storage deals are worth it?
Cloud storage deals are worth taking when the price still looks good after the first renewal. Annual billing usually saves money over monthly. Intro discounts from providers like IDrive and Google One are good if you plan to stay. Lifetime offers, such as pCloud’s, pay off only if you keep the account for many years.
Deals come and go, but the maths behind them does not. This page lists standard prices with a check date, shows how to compare real costs and explains which kinds of discounts are safe. We update it when prices change.
| Provider and plan | Standard price (US) | Cost per TB per year | Typical deal pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google One 2 TB | $99.99 per year | About $50 | First-year discounts for new subscribers |
| iCloud+ 2 TB | $9.99 per month | About $60 | Rarely discounted; bundled in Apple One |
| Microsoft 365 Personal (1 TB) | $99.99 per year | About $100, includes Office | Retail discounts on annual keys |
| Dropbox Plus 2 TB | $9.99 per month | About $60 | Trial offers, annual billing saving |
| IDrive Personal 5 TB | $9.99 per month standard | About $24 | Discounted first year ($6.99 per month) |

How to judge any cloud storage deal
Judge a deal on three numbers: price per terabyte per year, the renewal price and the total over three years. A big first-year discount can still cost more than a steady plan over time.
- Find the renewal price. It is often in small print or on the checkout page.
- Calculate cost per TB per year. Divide the yearly price by terabytes.
- Add three years. First year at the deal price, then two at renewal.
- Check what you lose. Some deals exclude features or limit devices.
- Check the refund window. Useful if the service disappoints.
Worked example: IDrive’s first-year deal
IDrive Personal 5 TB lists $6.99 a month billed yearly for the first year, then $9.99 a month. That is about $84 in year one and about $120 each year after. Over three years, the total is about $324, or roughly $22 per terabyte per year.
That is a fair deal if you need several devices in one account. Read our IDrive review for features and limits.

Send me the checklistLifetime deals: subscription vs one payment
A lifetime deal makes sense if the one-time price is lower than about five years of the equivalent subscription, and you trust the company to stay in business. pCloud is the best-known example and runs frequent sales on its lifetime plans.
The risk is that “lifetime” means the life of the company or product. Keep a second copy elsewhere. Our lifetime cloud storage guide does the maths in detail.
When do the best deals appear?
Discounts tend to cluster around Black Friday and Cyber Monday, New Year, back-to-school season and provider anniversaries. Google One has offered first-year discounts to new subscribers, and pCloud runs seasonal lifetime sales. Sign up for our newsletter to hear about deals we would recommend anyway.
Deals to avoid
- Unknown “lifetime” services with no track record
- Deals that hide the renewal price
- Bundles that lock your data with no export tool
- Plans with tiny file-size limits or no version history

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest option among cloud storage deals?
On a cost-per-terabyte basis, IDrive’s discounted 5 TB first year is among the cheapest regular offers, at about $84 for the year. For small needs, iCloud+ 50 GB at $0.99 per month is the cheapest entry plan. Lifetime plans become cheapest only after several years.
Do cloud storage deals increase at renewal?
Often, yes. Many intro deals apply only to the first year, then the price returns to standard. IDrive, for example, lists a lower first-year price and higher standard price after. Always check the renewal price before you buy and calculate a three-year total.
Is a lifetime plan cheaper than cloud storage deals on subscriptions?
It can be, if you keep the plan long enough. A lifetime plan usually breaks even after about three to five years compared with a similar subscription. The risk is the provider changing terms or closing, so keep a second copy of important files.
When is the best time to buy cloud storage?
Black Friday and Cyber Monday usually bring the biggest discounts, especially on lifetime plans. Some providers also run New Year and anniversary sales. If you need storage now, a monthly plan lets you switch to an annual deal when one appears.
Are cloud storage deals safe?
Deals from established providers on their official websites are safe. Be careful with third-party resellers, unknown lifetime services and keys sold far below normal prices, which may be revoked. Buy direct or from recognised retailers, and check the refund policy.
