What is a cloud hard drive?
A cloud hard drive is cloud storage that appears on your computer as a drive letter or folder, so you can open and save files as if they were stored locally. Files download when you open them and upload when you save. It saves disk space, but it is usually sync, not a versioned backup.
Services such as pCloud Drive, Google Drive for desktop and OneDrive’s Files On-Demand all offer a cloud hard drive experience. This guide explains how they work, what they mean for privacy and how to use one without losing data.
| Service | How it appears | Files stored locally? | Backup features |
|---|---|---|---|
| pCloud Drive | Virtual drive (P: on Windows) | Only cached files | File history, trash, optional encryption folder |
| Google Drive for desktop | Virtual drive or mirrored folder | Streamed or mirrored | Trash and version history |
| OneDrive Files On-Demand | Folder with online-only files | On demand | 30-day recycle bin, versions |
| Dropbox online-only files | Folder with placeholders | On demand | 30-day history on Plus |
How does a cloud hard drive work?
The app shows every cloud file in your file manager, but stores only placeholders on your disk. When you open a file, the app downloads it in the background. When you save, it uploads the changes. A local cache keeps recent files for speed.
This means a laptop with a small SSD can “hold” terabytes. The catch is that without internet, only cached or pinned files open. Mark important folders as always available offline before you travel.
Is a cloud hard drive a backup?
Usually not. A cloud hard drive is the main copy of the files you store in it, not a duplicate. If you delete a file from the drive, it goes to the cloud trash and then disappears. A backup keeps an independent copy elsewhere.
The same point appears in our guide to cloud backup vs cloud storage. If a file lives only in a cloud drive, back it up separately, for example to an external drive or a backup service.

Send me the checklistWhat does a cloud hard drive mean for privacy?
Files in a cloud drive live on the provider’s servers, encrypted with keys the provider usually holds. Cached copies also sit on your laptop. Protect both: use two-factor login on the account and full-disk encryption on the computer.
If you need private storage, use a client-side encrypted folder. pCloud’s Crypto folder and Proton Drive encrypt before upload. See pCloud privacy and encrypted cloud backup.
Common myths about cloud hard drives
- “Files are on my computer.” Often only placeholders are. Check before going offline.
- “Deleting a placeholder frees space only.” In most apps it deletes the cloud file too. Use “Free up space” instead.
- “It is as fast as a real drive.” Large files open only as fast as your connection allows.
- “It protects against ransomware.” Encrypted files can sync to the cloud. Version history is your rescue.
What to check in a cloud hard drive provider
Check offline access controls, version history length, trash retention, client-side encryption options, platform support and price per terabyte. Also test how it handles large files and many small ones.

Frequently asked questions
What is a cloud hard drive?
A cloud hard drive is cloud storage that shows up on your computer like a normal drive or folder. You browse and open files as usual, but they are stored online and downloaded on demand. It saves local disk space and lets you reach the same files from any device.
Why does a cloud hard drive matter for privacy?
Your files sit on a provider’s servers and as cached copies on your computer. The provider usually holds the encryption keys. If you store sensitive files, use client-side encryption, two-factor login on the account and full-disk encryption on the computer.
How do I check a cloud hard drive provider?
Check version history length, trash retention, offline access options, client-side encryption, supported platforms and price per terabyte. Try the free tier with a few large files and a folder of many small files to see how fast it feels on your connection.
Can I use a cloud hard drive without internet?
Only for files cached or marked as available offline. Placeholders for other files will not open until you reconnect. Before travelling, right-click important folders and choose the option to keep them on the device.
Is a cloud hard drive cheaper than an external drive?
Not over the long run. An external drive is a one-time cost, while cloud storage is a subscription or a lifetime fee. The cloud adds access anywhere and offsite safety. Many people use both, with the drive as a backup of cloud files.
