How do you back up all data on Android?
Backing up data on Android means turning on Backup by Google One for apps, settings, contacts, call history and messages, then checking a few apps that back up separately. WhatsApp, Signal and authenticator apps need their own settings. Without them, a new phone may restore your apps but not your chats or two-factor codes.
Photos get most of the attention, but losing contacts, messages or authenticator codes can hurt more. This guide covers everything except photos. For photos, see back up photos from your phone.
| Data | How it is backed up | Check here |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts | Synced to Google account | contacts.google.com |
| SMS and MMS | Google One backup | Settings, Google, Backup |
| RCS chats | Google Messages via Google One | Settings, Google, Backup |
| Call history | Google One backup | Settings, Google, Backup |
| App data | Google One backup, if the app allows | Backup details list |
| WhatsApp to Google Drive | WhatsApp, Settings, Chats | |
| Authenticator codes | Depends on the app | Inside the authenticator app |
What do you need before you start?
You need your Google account signed in, Wi-Fi and enough Google storage. Contacts and messages use little space, but WhatsApp media can use gigabytes. Have your passwords and recovery codes ready for the apps you check.
Step by step: contacts
- Open the Contacts app and check where new contacts are saved. Choose your Google account, not “Device” or “SIM”.
- Move old phone-only contacts: open Contacts settings and use Move or Import to Google.
- Visit contacts.google.com on a computer to confirm the list.
- Export a .vcf file once a year as an extra offline copy.

Step by step: messages and call history
- Open Settings, then Google, then Backup.
- Turn on Backup by Google One if it is off.
- Tap Backup details and confirm SMS and MMS messages and call history are listed.
- If you use Google Messages, RCS chats are included too.

Send me the checklistStep by step: WhatsApp and other chat apps
- Open WhatsApp, then Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup.
- Choose your Google account and set frequency to Daily.
- Decide whether to include videos. They use a lot of space.
- Turn on end-to-end encrypted backup and save the password or key safely.
- Tap Back up now.
Signal does not back up to the cloud by default. It offers its own backup options inside the app. Telegram stores chats in its cloud, except secret chats.
Step by step: authenticator apps
Authenticator codes are the data people forget most often. If the app does not sync to the cloud, a lost phone can lock you out of accounts. Check now, while you still have the phone.
- Google Authenticator: sign in to sync codes to your Google account.
- Microsoft Authenticator: turn on cloud backup in settings.
- Other apps: check for encrypted export or cloud sync.
- Always: save each service’s recovery codes in a password manager.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Contacts saved to “Device”. Move them to your Google account.
- WhatsApp backup off. Turn on daily backup before you need it.
- Encrypted WhatsApp backup without the key. Store the key or password safely.
- Banking apps expecting restore. Most require you to sign in again. Keep login details ready.
How to verify your Android data backup
Check Settings, Google, Backup for recent dates. Check contacts on the web. Check WhatsApp’s last backup time. If all three look current, your data is covered. For cloud settings in one place, see backup cloud Android, and for everything else, the back up phone hub.
Frequently asked questions
How long does backing up data on Android take?
Contacts, messages and settings usually back up in a few minutes, because they are small. WhatsApp backups with media can take much longer. After the first run, Android backs up changes automatically about once a day when the phone is charging and on Wi-Fi.
What do I need before backing up data on Android?
You need a Google account signed in, Wi-Fi, enough Google storage and logins for apps you want to check. Have a password manager ready for recovery codes and WhatsApp’s backup key, because those details are often needed when restoring on a new phone.
What are common mistakes when backing up Android data?
Common mistakes include saving contacts to the device instead of Google, leaving WhatsApp backup off, losing the WhatsApp encryption key and forgetting authenticator apps. Each one can leave gaps that only show up when you set up a new phone.
Does Google back up my text messages?
Yes. Backup by Google One includes SMS and MMS messages. If you use Google Messages, RCS chats are backed up too. Check Settings, Google, Backup and look for messages in the backup details list to confirm they are included.
How do I back up authenticator codes on Android?
It depends on the app. Google Authenticator can sync codes to your Google account, and Microsoft Authenticator has cloud backup in its settings. For every service, also save the recovery codes offered when you set up two-factor login, ideally in a password manager.
